Selling online from Kuje: a starter checklist

Six practical steps for traders and producers who want to reach customers beyond the local market.

Many Kuje businesses already take orders on WhatsApp or Instagram. Selling online with more structure can reach more customers, reduce lost orders and build trust. These six steps are a practical place to start.

1. Formalise the business. A registered business name makes it easier to open a business bank account, accept payments through payment providers and reassure new customers that you are genuine. The chamber’s business registration support can guide you through the process.

2. Choose where to sell. Social media, online marketplaces and your own simple website each suit different products and budgets. Start where your customers already are, and add channels as you grow.

3. Make paying easy and safe. Offer the payment methods your customers prefer, give clear receipts and keep business and personal money separate. Good records will also help when you apply for finance.

4. Show your products well. Clear photographs, honest descriptions, accurate prices and a reliable phone or WhatsApp line do more for sales than any advertisement.

5. Plan delivery before you sell. Agree delivery times, costs and responsibilities with a dispatch rider or logistics provider, and tell customers exactly what to expect. Late or damaged deliveries are the fastest way to lose a customer.

6. Look after your customers and their data. Respond quickly, handle returns fairly and protect the personal information customers share with you.

The chamber’s entrepreneurship training and capacity development programmes cover these topics in more depth, and our export promotion services can help when you are ready to sell beyond Nigeria. Visit the E-Commerce sector page to learn more.
